RIT History

The Western Canada High School Senior Girls and Boys Basketball Tournament has been a staple of elite high school basketball since its inaugural event in 1994. The tournament has been held annually and has grown into one of the most respected invitational tournaments in the region.

Both the Western senior girls and boys programs have captured the championship eight times each, reflecting the program’s long-standing tradition of competitive balance and excellence. The girls most recently claimed the title in 2022, while the boys last lifted the trophy in 2020.

What truly separates this tournament from all others in Calgary is the unmatched student fan support. Packed gyms, high energy, and passionate school spirit create an atmosphere rarely seen at the high school level and provide visiting teams with a true big-stage experience.

The quality of competition is undeniable: teams that have participated in the tournament have gone on to win the Provincial Championship 21 times, a testament to the caliber of programs invited each year. Past champions have come from across Western Canada and even as far away as New York State, reinforcing the tournament’s reputation as a destination event. This year’s field continues that tradition of excellence, with six of the seven Alberta girls’ teams ranked in the provincial Top 10 across 4A and 5A, and four of the seven Alberta boys’ teams provincially ranked or earning honorable mention in the 5A division, ensuring another highly competitive and memorable tournament.
